Measure the Desk Before You Arrange It

Hands using a tape measure to map the width and depth of a compact desk

A useful setup starts with the desk that already exists. Five minutes of measuring can prevent a mat, tray, or stand from competing with an edge, base, or moving part.

1. Record the full surface

Measure width and depth at the narrowest usable points. Note curved corners, wall gaps, grommets, drawers, and controls.

2. Mark fixed footprints

Measure monitor bases, laptop stands, speakers, and any object that cannot move during the day. Record the full footprint, not only screen size.

3. Protect the edge

Leave space between a product and the front or side edge. Make sure nothing blocks a drawer, cable opening, or adjustable desk control.

4. Use paper templates

Cut plain paper to the published product dimensions and place it on the desk. Test typing, writing, and reaching before choosing a size.

5. Compare usable space

Outside dimensions and usable dimensions are not always the same. Check both on trays, risers, and holders.
